Frequently asked questions

What to know about microbiota transfer

The questions we are asked most often about the treatment, the prices, the donor programme and safety. If you cannot find your answer, write to us on the contact form.

What is microbiota transfer therapy (MTT/FMT)?
Faecal microbiota transfer is the transplantation of gut flora from a healthy, thoroughly screened donor into the patient’s intestinal tract for therapeutic purposes. MicroBiome Bank performs this in freeze-dried, pharmaceutical-grade encapsulated form, so neither a tube nor a colonoscopy is needed — the treatment can also be carried out at home under medical supervision.
In which cases may the treatment be considered?
The most common indication is recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection. We also work on the microbiota aspects of IBS and IBD, obesity and type 2 diabetes, immune ageing, Parkinson’s disease, and certain forms of autism and ADHD. In every case, a consultation with the treating physician decides whether the therapy is justified.
How is the process structured?
First contact, then a microbiome test and DynaMAP analysis, followed by the consultation, the donor–recipient compatibility test, the preparation and delivery of the capsules, and finally the MTT treatment itself. At every stage of the process you are informed about the next step.
How much does it cost?
MTT therapy is available in two packages, at 1.140 € and 1.350 €; the DynaMAP microbiome analysis costs 395 €, and storing your own microbiota (AutoBiome, 6×60 capsules) 595 €. The price of UltraBiome preparations depends on the bacterial density. We put together the exact quote after the consultation.
Who can become a donor?
We welcome applicants between 18 and 50 years of age and free of chronic disease, who undertake the multi-stage screening and the lifestyle rules of the donor programme: regular sleep, exercise and an additive-free diet. At present we can only accept applications from donors living in Hungary.
How safe is it? How are donors screened?
Our procedures are stricter than required. Donors do not undergo a single screening only: we apply a multi-stage protocol that also takes the incubation period into account. Serological testing is carried out on at least two separate occasions, 8 weeks apart — screening for HIV, hepatitis A/B/C/E, syphilis and inflammatory markers. Only a donor who is negative on every repeated test is eligible.
How long can the capsules be stored?
Freeze-dried capsules keep for months at home in a refrigerator and for decades in a freezer. This is what also makes the long-term preservation of your own microbiota possible.
What is AutoBiome, and why is it worth storing my own microbiota?
Autologous microbiota transfer (aMTT) is a kind of health insurance: you can store your gut flora while it is still healthy, so that you can get it back after a later event that causes dysbiosis — a course of antibiotics, surgery, chemotherapy. The sample is your own, so it is naturally compatible.
Why is every shipment different?
The composition of the capsules varies from batch to batch, that is, by LOT number, because each one is made from a sample taken from a given donor at a given time. Every composition is unique and cannot be reproduced — this is why we work with a compatibility test.
Am I buying a product or using a service?
A service. MicroBiome Bank does not sell a product; under the 869015 TEÁOR number of the SCPA 2008 classification (medical laboratory services) it connects screened donors and recipients. The contents of the capsules remain the property of the donor until the recipient has paid the cost of the associated medical services.
Do I need a referral or a treating physician?
The therapy is a medical service, so it can only be used under the direction of a treating physician. After registration we arrange a consultation, where the doctor decides on the indication and the protocol. The content of the website is for information only and does not replace professional medical advice.
How can I get started?
Fill in the patient registration form, or write to us using the contact form. After registration you receive a unique identifier, and we handle the further steps with that identifier — from the consultation to the delivery of the capsules.
